South Salem, NY (I-Newswire) June 3, 2012 - Teich Garden Systems LLC announced the completion of a new Good Food Garden™ at the River City Youth Foundation in Austin, Texas. The garden was sponsored by Scripps Networks Interactive and its Food Network together with Time Warner Cable and Share Our Strength. The garden provides a platform to give kids hands-on learning about where food comes from and to improve their nutritional knowledge. The Austin garden is the 38th Good Food Garden built by Teich Garden Systems around the country and the second in The Lone Star State.

The opening of the garden and first planting day was attended by State Representative Eddie Rodriguez and David Kercheval from the Texas Department of Agriculture. Employees of Scripps Networks and children from River City Youth Foundation planted cucumbers, peppers, watermelon, spinach, beans and herbs. Even the rain could not dampen the spirits of everyone participating in the event.

“Too many kids in America go hungry every day. Good Food Gardens are a great way to introduce children to nutritious fruits and vegetables–food they might not try otherwise. Research shows that if they are the ones who grow it, they are more likely to eat it,” said Kathy Brabson, area vice president of operations for Time Warner Cable. “By working with River City Youth Foundation, this Good Food Garden can provide benefits to youth, their families and the local communities year round. “

Mark Teich, founder of TGS, noted, “The Good Food Garden initiative established by Scripps Networks Interactive continues to address a serious health problem in our country by teaching children and their families about sustainable gardening and encouraging them to adopt healthier eating habits. Scripps Networks and their charitable partner, Share Our Strength, and Time Warner Cable have taken an important step in improving the long-term health of this community. We are thrilled that our gardens can be a part of this initiative literally from coast-to-coast.”
