Pilani Rajasthan Shridhar University Celebrates Human Rights Day 2011

Human Rights are Universal is a common dream in Perth or Pilani or Pittsburgh and recognition of human rights aims at preserving dignity and upholding equality of all people before the law.

Pilani (I-Newswire) December 12, 2011 - Human rights belong equally to each of us and bind us together as a global community with the same ideals and values. Human rights are our common heritage and their realization depends on the contributions that each and every one of us is willing to make, individually and collectively, now and in the future - thus spake Louise Arbour, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

On December 10, 1948 the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights - UDHR the foremost statement of the rights and freedoms of all human beings consisting of a preamble and 30 articles, setting out a broad range of fundamental human rights and freedoms to which all men and women, everywhere in the world, are entitled, without any distinction.

For translating and disseminating the UDHR into more than 380 languages and dialects - from Abkhaz to Zulu and thus making it truly universal, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights has been awarded the Guinness World Record for having collected.

Human rights are legal entitlements to people for the simple reason that they are human. These rights have been variously described as fundamental, inalienable, basic and even God-given. They apply equally to all persons regardless of age, race, creed, gender or social status. Since, the biggest obstacle to enjoyment of human rights is poverty, Universal poverty removal is very vital for achieving Universal Human Rights.

This year, millions of people world over decided that the time had indeed come to claim their rights and took to the streets and demanded change. Many found their voices using the internet, Twitter, Facebook, YouTube, etc to inform, inspire and mobilize supporters to seek their basic human rights. Social media beyond doubt helped activists organize peaceful protest movements in cities across the globe - from Tunis to Madrid, from Cairo to New York to New Delhi - at times in the face of violent repression.

Continuing the tradition of celebrating various days of national and international importance, Shridhar University Pilani observed Human Rights Day on December 10, 2011. On this occasion, thanking Miss Sonam a second year engineering student for painting a special poster, Prof BR Natarajan Pro Vice Chancellor shared the above details of the significance of the day along with salient aspects of the 30 articles in UDHR and urged the faculty and students of Shridhar University, Pilani to champion the cause of human rights and carry it forward lifelong as a mission with passion.
