5,600 New Dementia Cases Expected in the Next Ten Years in Ontario
According to a new study by The Alzheimer Society of Ontario, 18,400 eastern Ontarians over 65 are currently diagnosed with dementia. That number is expected to rise 30% to more than 24,000 in this region, which comprises roughly one in five seniors.
Ottawa (I-Newswire) August 18, 2012 - According to a new study by The Alzheimer Society of Ontario, 18,400 eastern Ontarians over 65 are currently diagnosed with dementia. That number is expected to rise 30% to more than 24,000 in this region, which comprises roughly one in five seniors.
“It’s probably a conservative estimate,” says Dr. Frank Molnar, Eastern Ontario’s top geriatrician and one of the report’s co-authors.
This means that more and more, seniors and their families are going to be looking for different ways to deal with this illness. Senior home care services can go a long way to relieve the health care infrastructure, providing suffering individuals with reliable, professional care at home where they can live with the effects of dementia.
Some of these services include:
• Regular supervisory visits for safety and satisfaction checks, which allows home care personnel to stay on top of changing needs and deal with issues before they can cause harm.
• Designing, implementing and monitoring a care plan that suits the patients’ needs, personal desires, and budgets. The care plan can be altered at any time based on changing needs.
• Ongoing communication with other health care professionals as requested and required to ensure all aspects of the home care is managed properly.
A shining example of a quality home care service provider is the Ottawa company Retire-At-Home. Dealing with medical issues on an ongoing basis requires dedicated people who will take the time to listen to the concerns and challenges of a senior living at home, understand the pain, and ease any fears or tensions that may arise while being treated for illness.
