2013 Chrysler Vehicles Will Have 8- And 9-Speed Transmissions Available At Cumberland Chrysler

Chrysler has announced that it will begin production of its new 8- and 9-speed transmissions in Kokomo, IN. Expect better fuel-efficiency and performance from the vehicles at Cumberland Chrysler Center.

Cookeville, TN (I-Newswire) June 18, 2012 - As a part of Chrysler’s effort to increase fuel efficiency across all vehicles in its lineup, Chrysler plans to implement nine-speed transmissions in front-wheel-drive cars, including the upcoming Dodge Dart, and eight-speed transmissions on six of its cars and trucks. It has just been announced that these transmissions will be produced at three plants in Kokomo, IN. Production is set to commence at the end of this year for the eight-speeds while the nine-speed transmissions will start production early in 2013. The eight speed transmissions are expected to increase the overall fleet fuel economy of Chrysler by over 25% by the year 2014. The nine-speeds have yet to be tested sufficiently and there are no results. However, expect similar gains in fuel economy to further boost the company’s overall fuel economy.

As an added bonus, these transmissions also increase the acceleration of the vehicles they are put in. As the engine is able to make better use of its effective power band, 0-60 acceleration is notable improved. When the Dodge Charger switched from a 5- to an 8-speed transmission, it became much quicker. Not only did the Charger gain 4 mpg on the highway, but it also improved its 0-60 time from 7.2 seconds to 6.6 seconds. A nine-speed transmission could improve acceleration by an even wider margin.
