Austin, TX (I-Newswire) March 3, 2011 - When I first saw this article, I expected to see the same old tips rehashed in a slightly different way. I was pleasantly surprised to find 13 very unique and effective tips for losing weight. I rarely see many of these suggestions mentioned.

Every week, the magazine rack is full of headlines about how to lose weight.
Over the years, we’ve certainly read dozens of claims and tips, from herbal remedies to smoothie recipes, pharmaceutical pills to diet plans. Well, I want to lose 13 pounds without pharmaceuticals. And, if you want to lose weight, I invite you to embark on this journey with me.
Now for the clinically founded weight loss tips, (and some of my own observations), all in one place, all for free. This week, I’ll lay out natural ways to stimulate your metabolism. In the following weeks, we’ll dive into nutrition, exercise, and an inspiring interview with a local woman who has lost nearly 100 pounds and still has a long way to go, but is doing great.
Thirteen Clinically Verified, Natural Weight Loss Tips.
1. Cinnamon. One clinical study showed that people who took 500 mg (equal to ¼ teaspoon) of cinnamon just before eating each of their 3 main meals of the day, lost 300 to 500 percent more belly fat than the placebo group. You can buy cinnamon tablets, or try my pre-meal cinnamon smoothie. The key is that Cinnamon lowers blood sugar (which is good), but it is very powerful, so do not take more than 1,000 mg at a time or it could make your blood sugar go too low.
2. Green Tea. Many studies have shown that green and Ceylon teas boost metabolic rate. So I’ve replaced my afternoon coffee with tea.
3. Peppermint Gum or Mints. Sometimes I feel full, yet I still want to eat because what I was eating was so tasty. The key is to kill the craving for that taste. Tossing a peppermint or a piece or gum into your mouth is like a kill-switch to that craving. Peppermint in particular is helpful because studies show that its scent triggers a satisfied feeling in the hunger center of the brain.

This is the first time I've seen this information about peppermint mentioned. I'm going to start carrying a pack of gum with me and try it.

4. Vitamin C. It does many things, but in regards to weight loss, it helps curb Cortisol, (a stress hormone that contributes to weight gain–especially around the belly), and stimulates the production of Carnitine, which the body uses to turn fat into fuel. The suggested goal is to get 1,200 mg of vitamin C per day.
5. Vitamin D. Studies show that taking 5,000 to 10,000 iu of vitatmin D per day is equivalent flu prevention to a flu shot. And, as for weight loss, multiple studies have shown that obese individuals have lower levels of vitamin D than slim. But further studies are currently underway to see if increasing vitamin D actually aids in weight loss, or if the lower levels of vitamin D are caused by the obesity.
6. Probiotic. A healthy gut is key to good health and elimination of toxins that are released in the process of weight loss. There are many reasons why you might have low levels of good intestinal flora. Taking a probiotic with four or more strains of flora, labeled at one billion live organisms or more, can help you to build a healthy gut.
7. Fish Oil. I cannot emphasize enough how important this supplement is in our culture for brain health. There are way too many studies to cite. We need the omega fatty acids (EPA, DHA) for our brains. As for weight loss, one study showed that the group taking fish oil lost three-and-a-half times more weight than the placebo. Just make sure to get a reputable brand so that you're not ingesting mercury with your oil.
8. Fifteen Minutes of Action Per Day. No time for exercise? No problem. Just do three, five-minute action breaks every single day. Smokers take smoke breaks, you can take a "health break." Your action could be as simple as walking the stairs in your office building, walking around the block, or dancing with your kids. Then get back to your life duties.
9. WATER. Many people actually crave food when they are dehydrated. Coffee, milk, juice and soda do not count as water. If you really hate plain water, mix in some lemon juice and stevia sweetener, or mix in a little of your favorite juice for a hint of flavor. You should be drinking between 64 and 100 ounces of water per day.
10. Cure a Sweet Tooth With Fruit. Is your downfall a sweet tooth? Easy fix. Just keep a lot of apples on hand. Every time you want sweets, eat an apple. Have multiple cravings per day? Add more fruit. One study showed that people who complained of a sweet tooth eliminated sugar cravings within a week if they ate up to four pieces of fruit per day.
11. Dark Chocolate. This is just a bonus. If you buy chocolate bars labeled 70 percent cocoa or more, then you can have a couple squares as another sweet treat. Only when chocolate is labeled in this way is the sugar content low enough to not kill your diet and negatively effect your brain.
12. Don't Eat Four Hours Before Bed. I know a girl who lost about 20 pounds before her wedding with this one rule. This is particularly difficult for me, so here are two things that are helping me to stick with it. Eat most of your food throughout the day (starting with breakfast). Then eat a low calorie, but filling dinner. If you starve yourself during the day, then even if you eat a big dinner you will be more likely to get a ‘snack craving’ in between dinner and bedtime. Decaf Green Tea, “Gummy” vitamins, and gum. Warm liquids make you feel full. Gummy vitamins appease your sweet tooth just enough. Peppermint gum gives you something to chew, and the scent triggers a satisfied feeling in your brain.
13. Sleep. Studies show that those who get seven to nine hours of sleep per night lose weight more easily than those who don't. So at the end of the day, give your body the sleep it needs to work at peak performance tomorrow.
Here’s to your health and your weight loss success.
