Dancing with Disabilities Workshop

The Center for Modern Dance Education located in Hackensack, NJ will be hosting a workshop titled, Wheels in Motion, that will explore how people of all ages and abilities can enjoy the art of dance.

For the 2012/2013 season, The Center for Modern Dance Education (CMDE) is using the theme of "World Rhythm" to celebrate its 51st year, with workshops featuring guest artists from a variety of backgrounds.

The fifth workshop of the season is titled, Wheels in Motion, and will be taught by guest artist Mark Roxey, Artistic Director of the Roxey Ballet Company and winner of many outstanding art education awards. Mark founded the "Wheels in Motion" dance program in 1994 and his teaching, mentoring and performing methods have provided a great vehicle for people of all ages and abilities to explore the art of dance regardless of individual disabilities.

"I am very excited to come to CMDE to work with the students and faculty. I believe that the more effort we can make to incorporate my methods of dance creations and instruction, the more we can inspire people with disabilities to want to create and participate in dance. Disabled artists have so much they want to share with the world and it is our responsibility as artists to have them at the creation table in every possible way, sharp and form... We will discover possibilities in dance movement and access to the creation of dance for those individuals living with disabilities," said Mark.

Mark will teach innovative ways to create and practice dance to anyone interested in expanding their dancing self no matter what their ability or disability may be. Dancers, dance teachers, choreographers, dancers who use wheelchairs, from 12 to 92 are welcome.

The workshop will take place at the CMDE Studio 84 Euclid ave in Hackensack on Saturday, March 2nd from 2-4pm. A suggested donation of $5 will contribute to the ongoing support of the studio and its mission to bring dance to everyone.

Artistic Director of CMDE, Elissa Machlin-Lockwood, is very excited to be able to offer such a rare opportunity to explore wheelchair choreography to the local dance community.

Said Elissa, "CMDE student and friend Tracey Wacha who founded, "Specially Able Community" instigated the idea of an event focused on the particular challenges of dancers who use wheelchairs. Mark Roxey will be inspiring us all to move, think and express ourselves in new ways."

More workshops will be added to the 2013 schedule and CMDE will also be presenting a Spring Cameo Concert on Thursday, March 21st at the Fair Lawn Community Theater starting at 7pm. The concert will feature The Moving Experience Dance Company, which are adults with disabilities, as well as CMDE's advanced students and staff as well as special guest company, Inner City Ensemble.
